Day 4: Wurzberg to Rothenburg

Despite the lively celebration the night before, German beers left us without the aftereffects that we experience back home. We got an early start and arrived in Würzburg just in time for the Residenz Palace opening. Opting to skip the crowded English tour, we explored the stunning interior on our own. Nearly destroyed in WWII, it was meticulously rebuilt using historical photos, with much of the art and furniture safely stored and restored.

After touring the palace, we wandered through the beautiful gardens, strolled the town, and crossed the old pedestrian bridge—where we were notably the only ones without wine or beer in hand. We then hiked up to Marienberg Fortress in record time on the trip's hottest day, only to find the interior closed for construction. We cooled off with vending machine water while admiring views of the Main River and cruise boats navigating the locks.
